Around the Block

This work is comprised of a wooden block that has been carefully painted an opaque flat white. I carried the block for three days. With my day to day activities, the block documents the day with its wear and stain.

I followed the two following rules:

  1. The block can not be put in a pocket, bag, or container

2. The block must be carried or place down within arm reach

This work was completed the three days before I began self-isolating due to the covid-19 virus. I now look at the work and remember the routine that I had before. The block came to my work, the gym, the painting studio, the grocery store, and restaurants.

Loser Does the Dishes

Several times in the past I have created my family portrait in the traditional sense using paints and drawing but, I wanted to take this opportunity and create a conceptual portrait of my family. It was tricky because we all are so different but the one thing that brings use together is our love to play games.

I had everyone sit down and I put a timer on of two minutes and told everyone to write down as many games that we played together that they could.

After I got the results I counted how many games we actually have which came to 126. Its funny looking at our answers because a lot of the games were repeated because those were the ones everyone had fond memories of but, the games that weren’t repeated where either because you were the best at that game or the worst.

I really enjoy how much these lists show my families essence as a whole, as well as each others individualism.

Portrait of a Tree

Lately, I’ve found my thoughts to be absorbed by the idea of life process, transformation, and aging. Regardless of how my image changes I hope to hang on to the unique traits that make me, me.

I found these pieces of wood that have been heavily processed to the point where they look nothing like their original form. Using a wood burner I found the slight remaining wood grain pattern on the pieces and made it visible again.

My hope for this piece is to show that throughout process and transformations we still stay the same in some ways.

Every Sunday, I cook enough food for a week. I enjoy this practice very much. However, I then have to microwave every meal after that, which I hate. It has always been strange to me that waiting a few minutes for a meal feels so much longer if I stand by the microwave while the food is reheating. There are many juxtapositions in this practice as the convenience does not necessarily outweigh the boredom.

This video concept became more relevant during this period of quarantine. Although I think about it often, it has become very apparent how much we are used to being stimulated.
