Tyler’s Work

Week #6

Week Notes:

I found Darcey Steinke’s article “Turn and Face the Strange” to be quite interesting. I could empathize with her experiences during Covid-19 and the disconnection that ensues when moving through spaces. As noted in the article, I agree that an individual’s facial reaction determines the interaction that follows, however with the implementation of masks, it impedes with this initial encounter, thus creating a disconnect. Another salient aspect of the article was when Steinke mentioned the use of masks in varying cultural contexts providing the example of spiritual practices. More often than not, people who live in the West are taught through media and educational institutions that masks only serve one function; to hide one’s identity for destructive purposes.

Thus, this correlation to villainism programs our psyche to believe that masks aren’t multi-purposeful nor connected to deeper spiritual practices. Lastly, I found the study done by John Howard Griffin using Black face to understand what it feels like to be a Black man thought-provoking. Despite wearing Black face to understand experiences of racism during his time, for me as a Black man, this spoke volumes to the power of white privilege. When Griffin mentioned that it was starting to get hard for him to move through society, he ‘switched masks’ re-affirming the unearned benefits that white folks accrue from just existing, while also demonstrating that intentions aren’t enough when dealing with matters of racial injustice. Real solidarity requires active labour, a loss a privilege and status that many aren’t willing to give up.

  1. Tyler:
    W1:
Notes on Sol Lewitt, Yoko Ono, Nauman complete and evidence of curiosity and engagement with material.
Kilometre image and description – seems related to conceptual practice, I like how you measured the kilometre using track/running and something you already do – measure this distance with the body. I like how you tracked each 100 metres with documentation. And sorry about your ankle!
W2: Image of Abramovic/Stillness gesture, and description complete and a good idea, I appreciate you made yourself uncomfortable/challenged to create tension, and meaning in the work, and reflecting on all the discomfort, moments of failure, and struggle – but I need to see evidence too that you watched the film and really go into and understood the ideas in Abramovic’s works. Could use more references to show you watched and understood it.
W3: 6 conceptual sentences are complete and sometimes get the idea – to write the simple formula for actions in each piece, as opposed to broader themes. Defenestration image and description missing.
W4: Notes on Adad’s work missing, and Distancing video portrait missing.
