Laura Phillips<\/b>\u00a0“Laurie<\/b>”\u00a0Anderson<\/b>\u00a0(born June 5, 1947)[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0is an American\u00a0avant-garde<\/a>\u00a0artist,[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0composer, musician and film director whose work spans\u00a0performance art<\/a>,\u00a0pop music<\/a>, and\u00a0multimedia<\/a>\u00a0projects.[4]<\/a><\/sup>Initially trained in violin and sculpting,[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Anderson pursued a variety of performance art projects in\u00a0New York<\/a>during the 1970s, making particular use of language, technology, and visual imagery.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0She became widely more known outside the art world in 1981 when her single “O Superman<\/a>” reached number two on the UK pop charts. She also starred in and directed the 1986 concert film\u00a0Home of the Brave<\/a><\/i>.[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Anderson is a pioneer in\u00a0electronic music<\/a>\u00a0and has invented several devices that she has used in her recordings and performance art shows.[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 1977, she created a tape-bow violin that uses recorded magnetic tape on the bow instead of horsehair and a magnetic\u00a0tape head<\/a>\u00a0in the bridge. In the late 1990s, she developed a talking stick, a six-foot (1.8\u00a0m) long baton-like\u00a0MIDI<\/a>\u00a0controller that can access and replicate sounds.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
